Information Utrechtse Aardwetenschappen Vereniging (U.A.V.)

Dear Master,

Welcome to the information page of the U.A.V. We’re delighted that you’ve chosen to study Earth Sciences in Utrecht! Whether you’re fascinated by rocks or interested in clay, everyone is welcome here.

We are the study association for Earth Sciences in Utrecht. Both the Bachelor’s programme (Aardwetenschappen) in Earth Sciences and the four Master’s programmes (Marine Sciences, Earth Life Climate, Earth Surface Water and Earth Structure Dynamics) are part of our association. We are here for all Earth Sciences students who want to deepen their knowledge, broaden their horizons, or simply enjoy student life in Utrecht.

The U.A.V. is run by a board of six students. If you’d like to learn more about the board and what it does, you can visit this page. For an entire year, we dedicate our time and energy to the association and to organizing activities for all of you.

Below, you’ll find a short overview of some of the activities we organize that you might find interesting. At the bottom of this page, you can read more about becoming a member of the U.A.V.

If you have any questions, feel free to send an email to bestuur@uavonline.nl. Our Ab Actis will get back to you as soon as possible.

Foreign Career Excursion (FCE)

Every year the Foreign Career Excursion (FCE) committee organizes a trip for master students to investigate their career prospects and discover which opportunities lie ahead of them. Last year they travelled to Norway, and the year before that they travelled to Iceland. On this trip, we visit foreign companies to learn more about their businesses, the challenges they face in their country, and how they address them. We visited the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and learned how they forecast the weather. We also visited a small consultancy firm that develops preventive measures against landslides and other natural disasters to protect the surrounding environment.

As a master you have the upportunity to join this trip. Or if you have big asparations for this trip, you can also be part of the organization. With other master students and a member of the board of the U.A.V. you will organize this unforgettable trip.

Committees

We have 24 committees in total, ranging from a charity committee, to a tap committee, to a DJ-committee and a year book committee. If you want to read more about the committees you can look at this page.

Master Activities

We organize two ‘master activities’ each year, these are only accesible for masters. You are very welcome to join every other activity that we organize, but these two are especially for the master’s students of the U.A.V. Because sometimes you just want to spend some time and have fun with your peers. Last year we went pooling and bowling.

Social Activities

A big part of our agenda is filled with all sorts of social events, trips, and cultural activities. Every other Thursday, we have social drinks in the association room (BBG 2.63). We organize all sorts of trips:

  • Ski Trip – 10 days – Winter
  • ApEx (Aardwetenschappelijke Paasexcursie / Earth Science Easter Excursion) – 6 days – Spring
  • FCE (Foreign Career Excursion) (Master’s students only) – 6 days – Spring
  • Batavierenrace (the biggest relay race in the world) – 3 days – Spring
  • BAX (Buitenlandse Aardwetenschappen Excursie / Foreign Earth Science Excursion) – 2.5 weeks – Summer

Last year, we also organized a date dinner with the biology study association (U.B.V.). We enjoy organizing activities together with other associations.

The biggest party of the year takes place in April. We bring the party outdoors to Beatrix Park in Lunetten. The summer season is just beginning, and that calls for a party! There will be snacks, drinks, and lots of music, including a performance by our band, Tektonika!

If you want a glimpse of our agenda, you can take a look at this page. On average, we organize three activities per week. So there is lots to do and see!

Symposia and (company) lectures

The Assessor Tertius in our board has the important role of organizing lectures and symposia. Throughout the year there are lots of lectures you can attend. These are givin by master students, PhD students or teachers. There are free snacks, coffee and thee.

Every year we also organize at least two symposia. Last year the topics were:

  • Paleomagnetism – From Space Weather to Magnetic Navigation
  • Tipping Points – In a Climate Perspective

The Assessor Primus has the role of organising career imformative activities. We have lectures given by companies, company visits and the networking event.
