Solar Geoengineering: Politics, Power and Planetary Intervention Technologies

Dear members,

Some climate researchers are advocating for more research into speculative planetary intervention technologies, particularly solar geoengineering, as a way to artificially cool the planet. However, many other scientists and civil society organizations warn of the potential physical and political risks involved with climate engineering, urging for global restrictions on the development and deployment of such technologies. A coalition of African countries, along with Vanuatu, Fiji, and others, have called for an international non-use agreement on solar geoengineering. In this context, what is the current state of the debate in this field? And what challenges might researchers face if they wish to study solar geoengineering in an increasingly contentious political climate, where views on the topic are deeply divided?
This lecture will be on Tuesday, February 18 (14:30 – 15:30) in BBG 0.20. There will be free snacks and you can earn a SAC-point, see you there!
