Dear students and staff,
On Friday the 20th of June at 16:00 Niko Wanders , Associate Professor Physical Geography, Landscape Functioning, Geo-computation and Hydrology will give the final FEST of the 2025 FEST spring season about:
Droughts, from drivers to impacts
Drought events are extended periods of unusually low water availability, often with profound consequences for both ecosystems and human societies. In recent decades, we have witnessed a rise in both frequency and severity of these events globally. In this lecture, we will explore the complex drivers and feedback mechanisms that lead to the onset, the intensification, and the eventual drought end. Furthermore, we will distinguish typical drought events from the more extreme, multi-year drought that can have long-lasting impacts. We’ll examine how predictable these drought events truly are and how climate change is influencing their occurrence. Finally, we’ll consider the broader societal impacts of drought and discuss strategies for reducing vulnerability and building resilience in the face increasing drought occurrence.
You can join the talk on-campus in KBG-COSMOS or online through our FEST TEAMS channel: https://tinyurl.com/fest-2025-2ndsemester
Drinks will be provided afterwards in the canteen of the Vening Meinesz or, if the weather allows it, outside in front of the VMA.
Hope to see many of you at the FEST!
Best wishes,
The FEST committee
